Venice
Venice is a lagoon city in northeastern Italy built across more than 100 small islands. Its historic centre has lost roughly 70% of its residents since the 1950s, falling below 48,000 in 2025, while annual tourist arrivals are estimated in the tens of millions. The city has introduced a paid day-tripper access fee, tour group caps, and large cruise ship restrictions in response to overtourism pressure.

Visiting central areas can feel more like processing through a queue than experiencing a place. Headline sights frequently require timed-entry reservations weeks ahead. Authentic local life has largely been displaced from tourist zones. Municipal restrictions (caps, fees, bans) are actively in place.
