Juneau

Juneau is Alaska's capital, set between the Gastineau Channel and the Tongass National Forest, accessible only by boat or plane. Cruise tourism dominates the summer season, with passenger arrivals topping 1.6 million in 2024. Starting in 2026, the city caps cruise traffic at five ships and 16,000 passengers per day (12,000 on Saturdays) under a voluntary agreement with the cruise industry.

Movement through central areas is slow — expect to dodge and wait. Lines at major sights routinely exceed 1–2 hours without pre-booking. Iconic views are difficult to photograph without crowds in frame. Local residents have publicly raised concerns about visitor volume.
